Heck no. Not my job as a fan. I'm there to watch and support, not play umpire or coach. Especially during meaningless tournament games. If we're playing for the Olympic Gold Medal? Maybe. Otherwise, don't care.
I was thinking as a coach. If you were a coach would you point it out?

As a parent/fan, it really depends on the situation.

I don't have a problem with that. Person who originally posted that was not a coach..
I think most of us have been coaches at one point or another... I guess the real questions is, if you were the coach, would you want someone to quietly point it out to you... In my situation, they did... The coach's opinion is the only one I am concerned with.

No this one

Again, try and follow along. It's not that hard. Do what you want. I am (obviously) just giving my opinion (which is also all I was doing when you went all Sigmund Freud on me..)
I liked the Sigmund Freud reference... well played!

The man clearly said he was a fan and went to report this malfeasance to the coach of his DD's team. That is the subject, lets try not to get off track.

No this is not the real question. You WANT it to be the real question in order to deflect but it isn't. The real question is the level of involvement in the game that a spectator should have. The answer is ZERO. Leave it to the umpires and coaches. Keep your butt in the bleachers and your pie hole shut unless it involves cheering and supporting.

The only part of this that I'm unsure of is... wheresmycar says the opposing team 100% knew that rock rosin was being used and the advantage of that vs. powder rosin. Based off this thread, and the amount of PM's I got with additional questions about the 2 different kinds of rosin, how can you know for sure that team, coach and/or pitcher knew the difference between rock and powder rosin? A large number of people on this forum didn't know, including some who are coaches at the same level.

While I understand the argument being made, I don't think it's apples to apples regarding someone using an illegal bat. An illegal bat being used is a safety issue, and that bat is probably illegal for a very good reason. If you wanted to call the pitcher, coach and team unethical for using rock rosin KNOWING that it's illegal, ok. But a pitcher trying to get a leg up on the competition with their grip of the ball is different than someone using a hot bat or one illegally modified. Ultimately, that could create some serious liability issues. @The Man In Blue would know better than I whether or not an umpire could be held legally accountable for this. What say you, TMIB?

Haha... I guess you don't want to answer my question... I don't consider what I did to be involved in the game at all... Certainly less involved than the "Fan" cheering "Nice pitch" when the umpire does not give the pitcher the corner and calls a ball. I know, and the umpire knows what that "nice pitch" actually means. But in your eyes, I'm the problem. I am ok with your opinion. Thanks for sharing.

If the umpires had been doing their job well, the rock rosin would have been gone before the first pitch. But I get it... lot of games... schedule to maintain... vast majority of teams would not attempt to use an illegal bag... inspecting rosin bags every game is inefficient. I did not bother the umpire with my observation.

Perhaps if I had come up with a clever way to cheer about rock rosin bags, that would make it ok? "Rock rosin, that's our plan, powdered rosin in the trash can..." Actually, that's pretty good.
The only part of this that I'm unsure of is... wheresmycar says the opposing team 100% knew that rock rosin was being used and the advantage of that vs. powder rosin.

18U A level team, committed pitcher, and it's raining. After the rock rosin was removed... she started using a powdered rosin bag... what a shocker. They got the benefit of using the illegal grip enhancer in the rain for roughly half a game. There was no penalty assessed other than removing the illegal bag. And, I'd bet, the rock rosin came right back out in their next game with different umpires. So, even getting caught, its still a net plus from their perspective.

Now, I didn't use "100%" in my post. And I suppose, its possible that in some alternate universe, there is a universe where this young lady pitched for 10ish years, and never learned the difference between rock rosin and powdered rosin... I'm convinced this is not that universe.

On the very remote chance she didn't know the difference, I am proud to have played a very small part in her education.
