The error rules desperately need updating in general, but in the name of consistency i favor this
That means if you have to think about it too much, just give a hit. Quit trying to look for errors. (This is different from watching the play again to make sure you saw it correctly before making a final decision)

and then just digging a little deeper. if a hitter is hitting .500 with all singles, i think you know what's happening. But consistency never happens, so including RoE and then trying to tease out quality of opponent seems to give more of an honest evaluation.

you can always calculate BABIP if you want too.

but it's a skill to read stats and figure out what that means about a player, not just what they did but what part of what they did is predictive of future performance. A player batting .200 with 30 RoE and a player batting .450 with 5 RoE should tell the person looking similar things.
