Have her work at whatever position she wishes to play. At this age, just make it fun for her while teaching the proper fundamentals. Their bodies change so much and the most athletic kid on the team, may not be a few years down the road.

Agree with the posters here. Work on all positions. Too many people work their daughters at one position and when they get on a team where that position is filled with a better player they are in trouble, and usually get bored because they either aren't good at it or simply don't play.

Also, remember that a lot of your upper level outfielders in travel ball and college were their teams best infielders at one time. Reason being is when you draft or build teams your best athletes are usually the infielders, especially when younger, and with a team full of infielders someone has to play outfield or sit right? Good luck

My DD #3 is a good utility player. She will play all nine positions (all 10 for situations that have 4-girl outfileds) in rec ball. In her last TB tournament, she played 5 different positions: P, SS, 3B CF and LF. This was a rec-league all-star team, and the coach said almost nobody would play more than 2 positions. DD #1 would refuse to play P, C or 1B, but DD #3 plays all of them.

As far as pitchers and catchers being in high demand, this is often true. The local HS JV team had a freshman as their #2 pitcher who hadn't pitched in over a year. Another HS JV team had a slow-pitch pitcher as either their #1 or #2 pitcher.

In mid-October, I got a call from a coach of a rec league 14U team (DD #3 is 12U) wanting DD #3 to play a double header for his team. He specifically needed her for her catching, and she caught all the innings of one game, although he did let her pitch a few innings of the other game. The trouble is, DD #3 is a pretty good catcher, but she doesn't LIKE catching.

DD #1 was an excellent 3B, and mostly played that position, but her TB team needed outfielders, so she played OF. One of the better HS pitchers in our area was all-conference SS. Her team had OK pitching without her, but they really needed an excellent glove at SS.

The moral of the story: when a girl is young, she can learn a lot of positions. The more positions she can play, the more useful she will be later on. Some team, some time, will need a girl who can play a certain position. It may not be your DD's best position, but if your DD can play the position well, she has a spot on the team.
