My DD plays 1B amongst other things. She has gone back and forth on 1B mitts. She likes them for scooping balls in the dirt, but she's learned to do that pretty well with a regular glove. A funny thing she told me one time was that using a fielder's glove forced her to focus more on catching in the pocket with a regular glove, or else the throw would hurt her hand. With a 1B mitt, she didn't have to focus on that too much. She felt like it made her a little lazy, which din't help her so much at other positions.
Now, that is just my weird DD, and may not apply to anyone else.
i think the 1B mitt helped her when she was little younger go down and dig balls that she might not have done otherwise. After using it for a season or two, it really improved her ability to do that. Once she learned it, it's not as important now.
