Wild 48-47 softball score sets national record for runs in a game

Of all the crazy softball games in the history of American high school sports, none have been as wild as the one that unfolded in California on Tuesday. In fact, none have even come close.

Coast Union softball player Lupita Gonzalez

According to the San Luis Obispo Tribune, the Associated Press and other outlets, two softball teams, which entered with just one total win, combined for a nearly four-hour marathon game. The 48-47 final score -- which came in the regulation seven innings -- set a national record for most runs scored in a game, with Cuyama Valley (Calif.) High eventually edging Coast Union (Calif.) High with a 13-run seventh inning.

The previous high-water mark for runs in a game was 94, which came in a very different, 88-6 blowout between two Massachusetts schools in 1983. A 2010 game covered by RivalsHigh came close to the record, finishing with an epic 47-44 final score, a total of 91 runs.

Perhaps fittingly, Tuesday's record game ended on a bases-loaded walk, with the Bears heading home with only their second victory of the season and a national record that seems unlikely to ever be broken.

"The girls were just so excited," Cuyama Valley coach Mary Jo Harrington told the Tribune. "They weren't going to give up in that game. They weren't playing for much but they wanted to go down winning."

Unsurprisingly, the statistics from the game are positively dizzying:

• Melinda Ramirez, Cuyama Valley's starting pitcher, earned a victory despite giving up 47 runs on 21 hits. She also scored five runs and had two RBIs.

• Coast Union allowed just 10 hits but walked an astounding 36 Cuyama Valley batters in the loss. The Broncos' pitchers also threw 25 wild pitches and hit a painful 12 batters.

• Cuyama Valley batter Ashley Armstrong walked all nine times she came to the plate, making her official stat line 0 for 0, 9 BB.

• Armstrong's teammate, Megan Harrington, finished 1 for 2 with seven walks, scoring five runs in the process.

• Coast Union's star slugger Morgan May hit for the cycle in the loss, going 6 for 7 and notching 14 RBIs.

If all that wasn't dizzying enough, consider this: Cuyama Valley earned the win without using a single substitute, since the tiny school's team only has nine players on its roster.

While his team may have eventually suffered a heart-breaking loss, even Coast Union coach Rocky Fordyce said they could take plenty away from the experience.

"We battled back and we never gave up. We had fun. The girls were very positive about it."

It's surprising that there were at least two people that could keep a scorebook for that game but apparently unable to teach softball skills.
