So, we can pick and choose which rules to enforce. When it comes to leaping/crow hop etc it’s all about doing it the right way and developing kids at young age to do it right. But having a kid leave early is overlooked as no big deal. Leaving early puts a disadvantage to the catcher making the play or the middle infielder who now has to make a bang bang best case.
And To your point
Its possible that leaving early from a base has more influence on the game then what the pitcher is doing.

Really think the only reason people pick on what pitchers are doing is because they want to think that the pitcher grabbing a little air under their foot is changing the outcome of the game, instead of recognizing that being a better hitter will.
1. Its an excuse.
2. It's normal for some to pick on the Umpire.
3. For some reason people think every single thing will be accurately officiated...and they expect that.

As to umpires watching the Foot and the ball come out of the pitcher's hand at the same time
that's looking at two separate places at once.
That in itself is a peculiar task!

Just to clarify, NCAA softball leaving early is no longer an immediate dead ball. It is now an delayed dead ball, and the defense gets to choose the result of the play or the runner can be declared out.
makes sense if there’s a double play

That is amazingly weird to have choices on the outcome of a play/broken rule.

( oddly that mirrors the discussion brought up about the mercy rule and having an option even if losing)
My only thought would be that if the defense turned a double play on the pitch, they should not be punished for a baserunner leaving early. Pretty rare scenario but it could happen from time to time.

Pick your poison. Do you want the BU watching the pitcher for IP or the baserunner for leaving early. BecAuse they are responsible for both.

Absolutely. I only call NFHS right now and they have not changed yet.

And yet the rule was broken before the double play happened. 🤷‍♀️

It's peculiar to me to think let's play this out and see how it happens and then make a decision.

Understand what you're saying about the double play, however, if the ball is thrown 'at any time' to second base and then thrown to first base and it still beats the runner at first. The runner at first would be out.
When the runner who left early would be out because she left early because of the rule. Regardless if they threw it to second or not.

always wondered why infield fly rule isn’t a dead ball. too much confusion when the runners start moving. especially for the younger kids.

Going back to this past summer it’s becoming more obvious

Agree. Is it to be called 100%, no but to call it changes they dynamic of the game and shows it’s not a wild card that can be played with no penalty. Of course to the team leaving early it’s always “she’s fast”, everyone is faster with a head start.
