I had recently listened to an umpire explain how one at first base he used "seeing" the foot hit the bag and "hearing" the ball hit the glove to make his determination.
If the brain can be off by 1/10 of a second based on what we "expect" then it is no wonder so many close plays get a different opinion from two people sitting next to each other.
