Playing up vs. not playing up has its good and bad side. In the local rec league, for example, 12U is the strongest division. So, DD 3 played 12U for 3 years, although she was on the 10U all-star team the first year. 14U isn't strong, so she stayed for a 3rd year in 12U. Now she no longer plays rec, since the 14u team has lost every game they played for the past few years. (DD 1 was on the last team to actually win a game, even getting 3rd place in a good tournament, and that fall she was on the first team to lose all their games. Guess which was more fun.)

If you even have the slightest notion that she'll lose interest, you need to do one of two things:

1. Find a better 14U team.
2. Move her to a better 16U team.

Please notice I said, "better" for both teams. Just because one team is 14U and another 16U doesn't make either better than the other. Plenty of really strong 14U teams that can win at 16U every weekend. Plenty of weaker teams at 16U that can get beat by a lot of good 14U teams. And vice versa.

My advice? Find a better team, regardless of age.
