My daughter absolutely railed a batter in the butt yesterday (sorry- it looked super painful)

A bunch of coaches started yelling Don’t rub it.

Is this legitimate medical advice for some reason?

And funny to yell. Sometimes I’ll yell rub some dirt on it

I’ve heard the rub some dirt in it. I had just never heard anyone super adamant that a kid shouldn’t rub a high school pitch to the butt. They yelled with a lot of urgency.

I was hoping to transfer knowledge if it was legit because karma seems to send quite a few balls my daughter’s way 🤣

Actually, rubbing a muscle that was hit hard by a ball can increase swelling since there is probably a contusion (bruise). First thing I’d be doing would be icing the area to help prevent excessive swelling/bruising.

Butt (pun intended) don't you want the bruise to be as big as possible as a badge of honor? My DD owns the record for HBP's on her college team. And always lead her TB teams and HS teams for HBP. Lots of ugly (strike that) GREAT pics!

Ha! That’s how I would be too, but not if you want the pain to dissipate a lot quicker. 😉

Because a genie might pop out? Trust me, you don't want wishes granted from an @$$ genie.

Only funny when on turf. ;)

Teammate on son's 4th or 5th grade baseball team turned the wrong way trying to avoid a hbp. Got him right where it counts. Nobody said "don't rub it", but judging by the smirks on several dads' faces, they were probably thinking it.

it's a stupid "old school" mentality, an attempt to not admit that it hurts

guess what......getting HBP hurts......let's get you up and to first (unless you really got dinged), figure out if you're going to be able to run ok, take a minute or several to walk/jog/let the pain subside to get you physically and mentally checked back in to be a base runner......and if we need to get you to the dugout and get some ice on it, or if you are really injured, let's get someone in there

this pretend it didn't hurt is nonsense......i care about the well being of my players, and i care about having a base runner who is physically and mentally ready to do the job we need her to do......all the other stuff is dumb garbage

now, with younger players who are just getting used to the game, and where getting hit can still be traumatizing, i have been known to make a joke or two "hey can you check the ball to make sure she didn't dent it" or something else silly to get the kid to laugh and realize it probably really didn't hurt and yeah, they're ok........but beyond that, it hurts to get hit......let's not pretend it doesn't
