What is the procedure a catcher should follow to appeal to the field ump on a checked swing?

The catcher cannot appeal to the BU, only the PU can.

All she needs to do is ask the PU if he/she will check with the BU. If asked, most PUs will always go to their partner, but in NFHS ball they are not required to.

That is how I did it in baseball, but that doesn't seem to work at our softball tournaments.

So what would be the non-offensive wording she should say? And should she turn around before she asks?

I like this. If the base umpire says strike it is harder for the plate umpire not to grant it. This came up in Dad's tournament this weekend. Catcher asked plate umpire....he refused to ask for help. After the game the base umpire said she went.

We are definitely experiencing the umpire shortage in our area and have encountered some great umpires, who have been hard of hearing, so was curious how the turning to ask would be perceived.

I wonder if the issue could sometimes be what position the field ump is in? If he is in C slot (behind SS area) there isn't much point in a plate umpire asking if a RH batter went. He can't see it any better than the plate ump in that situation.
