Right Here For Now
I would NOT use a fastball as a set up pitch. NOR another pitch to then set up a fastball.
:) did i mention i like the drop?!
Absolutely agree with this. Also it's my opinion that there's no more effective or devastating battery than a pitcher with a drop ball that drops like it's falling off the table and a catcher that will consistently stop it by dropping and blocking when in the dirt which is usually every time it's thrown.

Like the point to this!

(Accept i teach catchers to field/pick dirt pitches :) )
Ya know...
Control the ball to control the game kinda thing....;)

In another discussion about wild pitches
(how to score them in the book)
Some were considering in a rulebook it said
WP anytime pitch hits the dirt.
My comment was
There are times pitches are intentionally thrown in the dirt...

Woohoo great reason to teach catchers to field dirt pitches. 👍
Can instill confidence in the pitcher to throw it when they know it will be handled!

This term "fastball" is driving me nuts.

Ms. Rad what spin does a "fastball" have?

Q, do you mean "fastball" as just the first pitch they learn? What spin should that have? Or at least be close to.

I would day ideally a 12-6 spin, but I would day a fastball is a hard-thrown pitch without intent for movement. I am not demeaning or referring to natural down movement of top-spin movement.

Thats a great question!
Lets chat first point~ is that the pitch they learn?
Hmmm? When pitchers start usually the word fastball is used. Is it fast?
Like ZOOOM? :) no, its just trying to get to the plate with some sort of accuracy. What other word can it be called? Well since even the dictionary says fastball is a pitch at or near pitchers fastest pitch...
fastball is accurate word.
*The word FASTBALL in itself does NOT describe movement!
*Movement is determined by other factors.
*Notice Pitches intended for movement are called such with a directional word.

As for what spin~
Can say a variety of spins can be thrown pretty much flat and straight.
Including mistakes!
That happen because of several reasons slow rotation speed, release, mechanics.
Have experienced pitchers throwing bullet spin and somewhere between that and 10-4 spin
or(slighty sideways)
So drop spin 6-12 is visually different...
But again can be thrown with little movement - mistake.

The goal of pitchers is to make batters miss.
When the pitchers throw a mistake, less/no movement, obviously becomes easier to hit. And btw mistakes often get hit.

Why then would anyone intentionally throw a pitch thats straightest, flatest, and not faster? It may be intentional...imo its a mistake!

*I like this question to ~
When people say throw fastballs, ask WHY? Is there anything that makes it better?

People say, my dd throws a fastball that drops.
Very funny answer.
Because we know almost every pitch falls a little- gravity.

What then is the determining factor?
Drops have top spin that aid in assistance of droping the ball more.
The spin also reacts at bat contact generally can force more grounders.

Like drop also because it moves away from most batters bat path.
Especially those that are back in the box.

( to this same point,
Some notice a curve, while it can move east/west, can also stay flat. -some dont like the flat part- totally get that!
However it is stll moving away from bat path forcing batter to make some adjustment.
Important factor!

Especially note a curve can also be thrown - with a twist- adding up or down trajectory-
again batter needs to makes another adjustment.

These two pitches can work well back to back only because there is different adjustments the batter needs to make!)

ANYTHING that does not force the batter to make an adjustment, is imo a mistake.

My only subnote would be a curve ball that is below midthight, or a rise-curve at the shoulders are great pitches. At the waist or letters the horizontal movement is wearing no "camouflage".

For my pitchers that naturally throw topspin I don't teach a drop. Trying to put extra topspin on the ball always seems to lead to problems. For those that don't throw topspin we work on getting good 6-12 spin.
Couldnt follow this.
Is it saying dont try and produce more rotation?
Natural ability wouldnt you want to specialize on it.

Is there a reason the fastball is so effective in baseball, but apparently not softball? A lot of baseball pitchers have made a lot of money locating fastballs.

Cape Cod Mass.
I have a lot of respect for Bill, he has 'walked the walk at the upper levels of this sport and has a lot more experience than I do.

If I teach bullet spin it is as a quick alternative pitch for a girl who throws exclusively top spin and needs something else.

A lot of high level pitchers throw bullet spin.

Are these fastballs or 'crappy riseballs'?

Did catch for a pitcher who threw very hard bullet spin.
2 years back to back she helped us win JR. Olympic Tournament

We only threw it low inside.
Mixed it with a drop...
Imagine that :)
( also threw rise, change , curve)
*Cindy Bird aka: 'Mama Bird'
Top row 2nd from right.
Broad shoulders she had big forearms and a very quick release shot out of her hip.
Think it startled batters!
Pic from Nationals.

Other notable pitchers.
Top row 2nd from left is
*Julie Carpenter~Texas AM

Bottom row 4th from left
*Michelle Phillips not sure what college...Michelle threw 90% drops.
She could hit a dime on the ground.
*This is the arsenal of pitchers who gave National Champions Phil Bruders Raiders fits year after year.
We split win loss 50-50%
