Runner on second base. Batter hits ground ball. Runner on second takes off to 3rd. Defense tries to throw that Runner out on the tag play at 3rd. Ball gets lost and goes into the dugout.

The batter running to first runs through first base and comes right back to first base and stands on 1st base. Zero intent to turn to go to second base.
Just stands on first base bag.

Because the ball went into the dugout...the Umpire immediately steps forward and says
'dead ball that's two bases' and puts his hand up in the air signaling two fingers, brings the runner from third home.
But then...
he takes the runner who's standing on First Base and moves her all the way over to Third.

Sounds right to me unless she was not to 1st base when the throw was made. Then it’s 2 bases would include 1st. (I think).

To that point
The play at 3rd was happening in progress as the batter was running to first. (highly doubt the Batter/Runner reached first before the shorter/throw play to Third.)

Because there was a play being made at third, it was surprising the first base coach did not indicate for their Batter/Runner to turn first to head towards 2nd.
They did nothing like that and just stayed standing on first.

if the batter-runner was on their way to 1st when the throw was made, they get 1st & 2nd

if they had already passed 1st, which it sounds like they did not, when the throw was made......they'd get 2nd & 3rd

Explain "ball gets lost and goes into dugout". Was it a bad throw or fielder missed ball and it went into dugout or was there actually a tag attempt that the ball got knocked loose and went into dugout. Ill have to refresh my memory but I believe the base awards are different depending on if it was a throw or if the ball got knocked out of play. Will start looking at rule.

this is why I wanted to post this because where the Batter Runner ends up has to do with where they were when the ball went in the dugout....if memory serves...🙂

Throw was on target just low and it deflected either off ground or glove and got past Fielder.
Runner and ball arrived pretty much same time at 3rd.

Thanku dfp'ers for thinking this through appreciate your feedback for everybody!

Ok refreshed memory. A thrown ball that goes into dead ball territory is 2 bases from runners position at time throw left fielders hand.

A ball that gets knocked into dead ball territory during playing action is 1 base from runners position at time ball enters dead ball territory.

G. When the ball is live and is overthrown or is blocked:
Effect:
1 All runners shall be awarded two bases.
2 The award shall be governed by the position of the runners when the ball left
the fielder’s hand.
Note: Runners must return to touch a base missed or left too soon. When two runners
are between the same two bases, the award is based on the position of the lead
runner. Once a base runner advances to the next awarded base, the runner may no
longer return to touch any base missed or left too soon.
Exception:
1 When a fielder loses possession of the ball, and the ball leaves live ball territory
or becomes blocked.
Effect:
a The ball is dead.
b Each runner is awarded one base from the last base touched at the time the
ball entered dead ball territory or became blocked.

Important to the umpires decision!

Again thank you for your details dfp!
