I think that having more than 3 pitchers that actually want a decent amount of innings, is too many. Last year we had 3 good pitchers on a young 16U team and it seemed to work out very well. At Nationals, we ended up playing 9 games and I'd say that the inning distribution was probably no worse than 40/35/25%. One of the pitchers is a lefty, so it was nice to change it up in the middle of games (more often than not) prior to the opponent batter's second or third plate appearance. At no time did any of the three pitchers seem or claim to be fatigued. There is usually one or two other girls on the team that could pitch in an emergency anyways.
I'm a little nervous this year because we're down to about 2 1/2 pitchers.
