Pitching!
remember Curt Schilling vs the NY Yankees 10/19/2004 - almost 10 years ago today. in a must-win game, great pitching prevailed.

Of course just a week earlier he gave up 6 runs in 3 IP to the same lineup.

just like any pitcher, they can have a good day or a bad day and on a good day, a great pitcher can shutdown a potent offense.
what counted in that game was that the Red Sox needed to win or go home and CS got the job done

btw... i'm not a red sox fan :)

Ask Angela Tincher that question.

Also, keep in mind you do not have to record a hit to still score runs.

here's another thought to throw on the pile:

A "better than average" hitting team should have at least 6 players that hit well.
A "better than average" pitching team probably has one good pitcher, and then a few average arms behind her.

In a game, you are counting on 6 individuals to produce at the plate, and a single individual to shut them down from the circle.
If a few of your top hitters are stymied by the pitching, you still have some bats to rely upon; but if that one pitcher falters...(not hitting her spots well, ball not breaking, can't throw her change for a strike, etc.) you don't have much of a Plan 'B'... (other than hoping the defense behind her is flawless)

Except if you have below average pitching you turn the other team into 9 good hitters.

Is there a struggle to hit against all pitching, or just the above-average pitchers? If it's the second one, wouldn't that be an indication that pitching is dominant?

Personally, I think a team with dominant pitching will win more often than dominant hitting.

Unfortunately, it's against all pitching.

I finally concluded that pitching is more important than hitting when I started thinking about it like the chicken v. egg riddle. Once in that mind frame, its clear that there can be no hitting unless there is a pitcher to throw the ball. On that basis, pitching is most important. Case closed.
