My daughter (15yo) had ankle surgery 3 weeks ago. She had all 3 ligaments on the outside of her ankle tightened, plus high ankle. She also had a bone fragment and lots of scar tissue removed on both sides with a scope, and also had her tendon cut open and fixed. She is a pitcher and 1st baseman, power hitter who also plays volleyball and swims. Looking for anyone who has gone through a similar experience. She had a splint and crutches for 2 wks, has a cast that she can walk in for 3 wks, then has a boot for 3 wks. Total recovery is 3-4 months.
thanks,
tim

Over 9 sprains over about 3 yrs- last one was at volleyball in august while passing which made her realize how much of a problem it was becoming. She chose to do the surgery know so she would be ready for big time recruiting.

Not quite the same, but my 14yo DD broke her right fibula right where it joins the ankle. without the anchor into the ankle the fibula shifted and required surgery. Broke her Leg Sunday June 11, Surgery Friday June 16. A plate was put in to help set the bone, and a chord was wrapped around both bones to pull the fibula back into place and hold it there.

August 1 she was walking without her boot, only around the house where is was 'safe' and she started physical therapy. August 15 with no pain at all during PT and full walking the doctor
1) released her from PT
2) cleared her to 'play' saying please regulate yourself. You really should give it another month before you go hard.

Aug 22 or so volleyball tryouts started. Day 1, she came home in excruciating pain, day 2 was even worse and she shut down. She was able to do T-work pain free so that is all she did.

We had our first Tourney on Sept 9th. she fully participated, pitched, ran the bases etc At one point she was going to slide and then did not and she said she felt something, and another time pitching her drag leg did something weird and again go a little stab. But otherwise she was pain free.

Thanks for the reply @cnardone
for sure a different situation but glad to hear your dd was back soon. Her problem is that vball tryouts are early august and her doctors said she won’t even start running on a treadmill until 3 months post op. Much less playing volleyball and hitting. So she is a bit bummed about that.

She’s always said sprains are worse than breaks, and that seems to hold true for recovery time. Seems to be the same with surgery unfortunately. She is however glad she will be back in time for hs softball. Does anyone have any good drills for her to do right now with no right leg or even a bit further on?

She throws right and bats switch-mainly power from right and slap/bunt from left. True utility-everything except catcher mainly pitches and 1st base.

Pitching - there's a lot of spin and release work that can be done from a kneeling release position (or standing with the back knee on a bucket)
I'd think there could be some slapping drills you can do one-legged, working on staying square through the ball.

Make sure you give her the time she needs to recover though. Obviously don't push it and delay healing.

Yeah definitely don’t want to rush it-thanks for the insight!
