Total truth here IMO. Up, down, slow. Very few pitchers can do two of those three things well, so why add more?

Local Div 2 pitcher a few years ago. All American with a drop, drop curve and a change. 3 good pitches is what it takes.

Carly Hoover, who had a great career at LSU and Japan, said in an interview two pitches is plenty.

But little Sally on the 12U Diamond Girls throws six pitches. Just ask her dad. He'll tell you himself.

All your daughters need to do is throw 3 pitches as well as Jordy, should be a piece of cake I guess.

I know you were being cheeky and sarcastic, however, the #1 problem is that the people who need to know this info are the ones who refuse to listen or believe it. The take away should be the old cliche, why throw 6 mediocre pitches when you can master 3? And all the noise that the ESPN announcers say about this pitch and that pitch only perpetuate the problem.

This all makes my job 3x as hard when a family comes to me saying their daughter cries at night because her "friend" on social media brags about her 8 pitches while this family's 10 yr old kid only has 2. I honestly wonder sometimes how many kids, their parents, etc. disbelieve me when I tell them I threw 3 pitches only throughout my career. lol

I had the pleasure of warming up a pitcher like this once at tryouts. Boy did parents get mad when I asked "when are you going to throw anything that isn't fast ball down the middle?"

Ball move up, ball move down, change speeds. hit spots. pretty simple.

I always told my pitchers. "Until you can spot your fastball where I call it and have an effective change up, don't talk to me about a 3rd pitch."

That type of thinking / perspective is common in society. There's no reason for it to be different just because it's softball.
Aka: not everybody has open-minded thinking to learning. Add to it, Listening skills have fallen to the Wayside. Along with that,... People tend to want Quick Fix Fast.... like a drive-thru window... then tend to get all frustrated and emotional when two weeks later no results and finger pointing starts.


Then theres these Society pressures...
