Teach throwing mechanics first before you hit....:)
Catching with one hand. Demo by a 12 year old, in her 3rd year with me. This is something I teach along with hitting and throwing. Throwing arm is used for balance . Hand continues to cheek to meet glove hand. That puts arm in a good height to throw downhill. Glove hand is then used to tuck past your body to increase throwing velocity

I don't understand why you're teaching a 12yo student (3yr student) a so completely unorthodox throwing (fielding??) mechanics drill. What is the purpose compared to something more standard like stuff you'd find in High Level Throwing?

The actual arm action from the player in the drill was pretty good, but I can’t for the life of me see why you would want to field with your throwing hand that far away from your glove.

That much footwork (covering distance) would indicate more of an outfield throw. An outfield throw should have a different arm path than the one shown and if you're working on IF, then the arm path even further off.

I was only addressing the arm path.

What about the arm path don’t you like? Her fingers break thumb down on top of the ball which is way better than most girls her age. She gets some elbow spiral going on and some lay back. It’s definitely not a push like a lot of young girls. I would be curious to see what you think better would look like and why. I’m genuinely interested in your response. Always enjoyed a good arm action discussion.

I am not picking on the player, there's all sorts of abilities at the 12yo age.. Some are way advanced, others not so much.

That being said, there's a couple things that I would teach differently. Since he's teaching the huge step, I assume this is an outfield throw. For OF, field the ball outside of your glove leg. Regarding arm path, there's not enough scap retraction, I like a more "W" position for the arms and body if viewed from above..

This player also never gets the ball down to shoulder level where the ball, forearm, shoulders, glove arm are all on the same plane (the ball is above shoulder level, elbow below shoulder level). I think this is from the coaches cue "Hand continues to cheek to meet glove hand". The act of transferring the ball at the cheek results in this, I think. I would have the player gather at the sternum, to get the ball/arms/shoulders on the same plane.

She is an infielder 3b/SS, she plays on the same team as my daughter. She's a very good infielder. I don't know anything about throwing mechanics, so I will leave that for you guys to discuss.

I would take her arm action over most 12 year olds I see. It’s devoid of the most common flaws I see in young kids throwing.

The body seeks equal and opposite. I think the lack of scab retraction you see on the throwing side is a direct result of the glove action on the front side. On the positive, her arm Action is missing most of the major flaws I see in young girls throwing. Great place to start from.
