SL .... To follow up ... the person instructing this hitter, during this particular drill, wanted the drill to be used to help train the body to be strong and explosive at the same time, and emphasized having a good push-off from the backside. There was also an objective for the med-ball to be brought down diagonally and level out on release. For this hitter there was a desire that the drill be used to promote getting off of the backside, which I think you can see being demonstrated.

Swing from Yesterday

Here is a swing from yesterday.

As for drills last year...many focused on hand path and bat drag issues since that is what was most commented on in the early clips. Her coaches always stressed using the hips so maybe as someone commented she would think about using the hips so much that she would just spin.

After getting the feedback last week I did talk to her about how the swing is powered with the body and not the arms but we have not really worked on it specifically yet.

In this clip she is defintiely dropping her hands causing some bat drag and she seems to open her foot up on the stride too much. It looks different than the other clips though...but this pitch was much faster than in the ones from 2 weeks ago so she is probably not able to think as much :) .

Here is a swing from yesterday.

She's still dropping her hands to adjust, in part because she looks like she's trying to stay erect and thus has to adjust with her arms and not her body.

I would...

1. Start with her hands lower.
2. Get her tilted forward over the plate, rather than standing up straight. Bend at the knees and the hips.
3. Stop the live pitching for now and work on some of this stuff off of a tee.

Thanks Chris.

I will try those and she will stick mostly to the tee for the next month.

What about her lower body?...the consensus seemed to be that she had regressed in that area.

Andyh ... this is classic 'bat drag'.

As you view the above video notice a few things.

Focus on the top hand throughout this clip. Her usage of her top hand, or lack thereof, is telling you a lot. Her top hand during this section of the video clip pretty much remains back behind her rear hip ... yet the palm of her top hand, if it were to be opened, changes direction ... the palm goes from being directed towards the pitcher to being angled towards the ceiling. Typically people refrain from directing the palm of their top hand towards the ceiling until contact. In other words, your daughter is using her top hand much like the Brrmmm Brrmmm action on a motorcycle throttle. That's not the correct usage of the top hand. Why do you think she is doing that? It is characteristic of 'bat drag', and it tells you a lot about what she is doing ... and what she is not doing.

As you continue to observe this section of the video, notice the rear elbow dropping down to her side. Question for you ... as she lowers her elbow to her side, is she applying a force to the handle of the bat with her hands? More specifically ... is she applying a force to the handle of the bat with her top hand that would be applied in a direction orthogonal to the barrel ... as in a direction that would be equivalent to supination (twisting/swiveling) of her top hand/forearm? To answer that question, all you have to do is view the bat barrel. Clearly the barrel isn't being rotated. It certainly isn't going rearward. The answer is "no, she isn't applying the proper pressure to the barrel with her rear hand/forearm". Your daughter is not using her top hand and is instead lowering the bat barrel behind her back where it is in a sense being "trapped" ... that is trapped where there is little choice but for the bat to be dragged towards contact.

Your daughter isn't using her hands until the barrel is trapped ... and that's too late if you want her to have a swing free of 'bat drag'.

So I ask you ... why is your daughter not using her hands? Has she been directed not to use her hands? Is she trying to maintain a hinge angle? Why is it that her hands aren't being used until she has trapped the barrel behind her body, when it is in a position where it can only be dragged?

Does your daughter understand that the role of the top hand is not to pull or push the barrel to contact, but to turn the barrel to contact? Does she understand that she needs to be applying that force much earlier than she currently is doing? Does she understand that the barrel tip, if traced during the swing, would resemble a rearward 'C' as we see below?

The secret ... it's "in the dirt" and "in the hands". Share the secret of the hands with your daughter.

Work on keeping her front foot closed.

That will force her to rotate her hips differently than by just fanning her front foot open.

She appears to be "sitting" as she swings top first. She is not leading with the hips. If she would lead with her hips (fire the rear hip towards the pitch) that will have such an effect on her top half that it is a waste of time until then to make adjustments to her arms, shoulders, or hands.
