Anyone have any good drills to help with getting rid of the ball quicker. It seems like we are a few steps late on most plays.

have live runners, with Coaches self tossing and hitting to IF. seeing a live runner give them a better sense of urgency (and you can have a coach working with base runners on proper overruns, turning toward second, etc.)

make certain you are teaching them to charge the ball as well, this can help to get them into their throw quicker, ie they are already stepping somewhat towards target.

The mechanics are still not up to where they should be(12u) but I feel it is the lack of urgency that is the biggest factor.

Average the H-1B time of your 3 fastest runners. Then hit the fielders ground balls and time that as well. Then compare and show them the results.

They need to develop their own internal clock that will account for the speed of the ball (smash vs. dribbler) and perceived speed of the runner (lead-off vs. clean-up).

Cape Cod Mass.
Put runners at home and infielders at SS. Tell everyone it's going to be a race to see if the ball or the runner gets to 1st base first. Then roll balls to the infielder in a way that will make the play at 1st base close. This is also good for teaching young runners to run through the base. If you want to take it a step further have them go mano a mano, have the same fielders and runners competing against each other to see who can throw the other out.

Put them in a proper fielding position (back flat, face close to the ball, hands out front, butt up, knees bent) and roll them balls from close range telling them to get it to 1B as quick as possible. Once they get good at this have them take a creep step and roll the ball from close range having them field it with a right left step and working through the ball, not stopping at it. Your girls are probably fielding the ball and standing tall to throw. They need to field it and stay down in their legs in an athletic position as they work to 1B, think chin over belly button
