Interesting finish

This happened to one of our local HS baseball teams. Home team up by one run in bottom of the 9th 2 outs with tieing run on third. Passed ball deflects off backstop and on deck batter picks up the ball then tosses it to the catcher who tags the runner out.

If the tag wasn't made wouldn't the runner still be out on the interference ?

Almost as good as Auburn's walk off hit by pitch win over Arkansas.

I'll say that's interesting. Home team up by 1 run in the bottom of the 9th should mean the game is over.

Tag wouldnt have mattered given it was offense who touched the ball... at least that is my humble understanding of the rule -

I would think it's an immediate dead ball/blocked ball once a non-defensive player touches the ball. Otherwise he could have thrown it into left field and the run scores - correct?

That's what I would think. The runner then would remain at 3rd
