SEC catchers threw out only 21.5% of base stealers in intraconference play this year. So if a catcher is throwing out 50%, she's either playing well above the level of her opponents, or she's really special.

The best stat for judging catchers might be steals allowed because nobody runs much on the good ones. In travel ball, you don't always know who's the best until you get gunned down a time or two.

Agreed.

Across all D1 in 2021:
Attempts: 15,534
SB: 12,875 (about 1 per game per team)
CS: 2659
Overall CS%: 17%

Compared to D1 softball you do have to factor in the inexperience of the MI and the fact that coaches don't always send the appropriate kid and probably never try and pick good pitches to steal on. Taking that into account, along with the fact that catchers at that age are still learning, probably not surprising that the good ones are throwing out similar percentages to what you see in D1 softball (@Gambler Bob's Bandits team for example).

I think we've all joked around with our team about having the catcher do a really wimpy "coming down" at the beginning of the game to entice steal attempts.

This is why you see the % so high for some younger catchers or those who travel. Takes teams a few times to be convinced I guess.

honestly the big difference I see for young catcher is learning that it's ok to one hop balls into second and taking the air out of their throws. Makes a huge difference for girls who's arms aren't cannons

DD is 1st year 14u, her CS is 22%. no cannon, and SS has botched a few, but that happens to all catchers. her transition has slipped a little, that is actually subject for this weeks lesson. Id say anything over 15% at 12u is doing good. remember, sometimes runners are stealing more on the pitcher than the catcher.

I found the old GC stats from Maddie's 2nd year 12U team (not-quite-PGF level)...

Maddie CS% - 21.4
#2C CS% - 31.4
#3C CS% - 13.9

#2C had a weaker arm, but a very quick release, resulting in similar pop times between the two. Coaches/runners would see the slower throw and get bolder about running. Maddie limited the attempts by showing off a stronger throw. #3C was an athletic lefty new to the position (I loved working with that kid!).

Second year 14U was 29.2%. With her current 16U/18U team, Maddie is 37.2% so far this year (SS is excellent!).

This is very true. Our catcher (who has a great arm) made all 3 outs in an inning throwing girls out at 2nd a few tournaments ago. I looked at another parent and he said, "slow learner, I guess."
