I think RAD's point is that people have to lead a team of one (themselves) and that should be independent of the presence of other leaders around them.

Edit: **what OS said above**

Forgive. You can't change the past so you need to just move on from the last play, last game, even last season. If you are a pitcher you can't dwell on the missed play the CF just made. This also includes yourself. If you made an error getting mad at yourself doesn't help.

Be their own leader.

What you'all think about this?

Every person is different. Every persons situation is different. Most do not even understand what it means to "be their own leader." Some do not know what "personal leadership" looks like, at least not how it should look, due to a variety of factors including upbringing and parenting. Some are just not meant to lead, be it themselves or anyone else.

Now when we say personal leadership I hear personal accountability/responsibility. Many adults can't even lead themselves. I think some folks just have to rely on others to get to where they need to go in life or at least to get to a place where they are comfortable leading themselves.

This probably applies to softball as well.

If we are talking about being their "own" leader I absolutely agree - it applies to everything you do in life. A short couple years ago my Catcher DD had a great conversation with Jenny Topping about this issue and how important it is to take, feel and control your own power. Wish it had been recorded!

I hear a lot of people complain about the youth of today being undisciplined and unmotivated, refusing to take responsibility. My eyes were opened to the reality that strong motivated kids are out there and thriving. I started seeing them rise in middle school, taking more responsibility in HS and now as DD is about to graduate and commission I am surrounded by young people who were born to lead, learned to lead and took up the mantle. Not every kid wears this trait on the surface. Some just underneath the skin and still others have to reach deep to find it but they do. I believe encouragement and high expectations returns positive results. Low or no expectations will often return that result. Lead by example.

Lead themselves, yes 100%. Unfortunately so many of today’s youth have been brought up to believe they aren’t responsible for anything.
I’ve seen too many players quit or switch teams because “the coach doesn’t play me” just to have the same thing happen on the next team and the parents blame the coaches. 95% of the time it’s not the coaches.
No one is expecting kids to be perfect but teaching them to be somewhat self sufficient and to own their mistakes is a huge life lesson that will do nothing but benefit them in the future.

At some point players have to take responsibility for their game, their attitude, their work ethic, their focus, their motivation, their etc. Yeah, be their own leader.
It is music to my ears when I pick up DD from school and she says, " Dad, I dont have very much homework today so we should go to the fields and hit today." I calmly respond, "Yeah, that's a good idea, sweetie." But inside I am like, "Damn right we should go practice today."
