Stepping on Home Plate / Out of the Box

I've seen this referenced when the offense is trying to end the inning early. I knew stepping on the plate results in an out - what I didn't know until today was that the batter still needs to hit the ball in order to be called out for either being out of the box, or stepping on the plate.

Correct. No contact = no infraction. I am 99.99% certain that is the same in all codes (without doing my usual deep dive).

To help remember that, think about slappers who routinely run out of the box while taking a pitch.

Now the part that is different in different codes is "what is out of the box?" Some codes say the entire foot must be outside the line (such as the USSSA rule you cited above) while some (NCAA) say any part of the foot outside the line is out of the box.
