My DD is having a hard time relaxing and whipping the ball. So a good friend of mine who is in martial art explain to my DD the reason why you relax in martial arts to strike your opponent versus muscle tightness. He also explain to my DD how energy comes from the ground up and any tightness in muscles diminishes the energy coming out of your hand. In the end he showed us some cool drills to help my DD relax and make a game out of it. Well she started to get the concept that you don't need to tighten up to throw harder so this has made her arm whipping a lot better. If you like I can post a video of the drills he showed us. Anyway here is a video of martial arts expert explaining relaxation for power. Maybe this video can help one of your DD it did for mine.

It's our fault, really. The coaches, the parents, instructors, ect.

We tend to say "throw harder", when we really mean to say, "throw faster". The two are mutually exclusive from one another.

One drill that helps is to have them expend maximum effort at the beginning of the pitch. As their hips move forward over their toes and they begin to fall towards the catcher, that moment of push is their maximum effort as they charge off the rubber. From there they relax and whip the ball. If they're expending maximum effort at the moment of release, then it's likely their shoulder is in their ear and their arm and wrist is stiff.

Here is the video my daughter and I created. Like I stated it did help her understand that being stiff had negative energy against her. I am actually going to use some of the martial drills on breathing and whipping for striking from videos I see on you tube. She really thinks they are fun because she gets to hit a huge punching bag my friend gave me for free. My goal is for her to understand no matter what sport if she is relaxed she play with a lot of power. I will keep all who are interested on our progress for pitching and hitting.
