-She will not be attending this high school next year because of a new school opening, so playing JV will not help her get on varsity next season.

Think about this for a moment...Next year's coach will have a new team with no returning players. Is there a possibility that the coach picks up the phone and gives a quick call to the varsity coach at this school to find out a little about personalities and attitudes of those kids coming from that school? Do you already know who is coaching at the new HS? The new school could be grabbing one of the assistants from the old school. If your DD desires to play at the new HS, I would think that their may be benefits of playing for the current HS.

On the other hand...be very prepared for the probability that she will not be on varsity. Knowing that a new HS is opening, your current varsity coach will more than likely look at addresses of the players. It would be mildly surprising if he/she was to elevate a freshman to varsity if they are going to be around one year. More than likely a sophomore with slightly less skill will get the spot over yours, because they have them for three years not 1 year.

Not sure if they are aware of which players are going to the new school. If they do know, then probably yes, that would not help her chances. If they deem her good enough to start on varsity, then I think they probably would take her. There is a fine line between the #9 player (starts on varsity) and the #15 player (bats #3 on JV). This is a very unusual school in that regard.

As far as her hurting her chances at the new school, with only two grades and far fewer travel players at this school, she isn't worried about that because the team will be so weak, they can't afford to hold that against her. Her concern at that school is having enough travel players so that they don't get run-ruled every game. :)
