Just took over as head coach of a 13U team with a
new group of girls (not new to travel just to our team). What are some of your favorite infield and defensive drills?

2 that come to mind for me which we did with whole team

1. We worked on non standard throws. Have them at P and field short bunt type hits and be able to throw underhand to C and the same with grounders to SS ,etc. Maybe your players are already good at that but we had a 12U team move up that would automatically throw everything overhand.

2. We would have a line at 2nd and SS with a 1B and a 3B plus a coach C and a coach hit. Grounder to SS they would just throw to first and follow and replace that person at 1st. Then hit it to 2nd and they would throw to 3rd and follow. You couldn't do it for too long but it got them moving and aware of the ball coming as the hits to 2nd and SS would often have the preceding fielder jumping over the ball or at least giving a small screen. When this was done right it was really great to watch. To me anything that gets them moving versus just standing and getting balls hit to them gets them going.

A bonus Drill we used to do with OF was throw a simple pop Catch and leave, then start running at a 45 degree angle and throw a quick line drive and the same drop then finally they keep running and throw one out where they have to go. In a few weeks we could barely throw it far enough for some of the better fielders. They learned they could catch a lot more balls than they thought.

Here is a link to some videos our Org put together 4 or 5 years ago, with breakdowns and explanations of our "Everydays" - the drills our teams do to start each practice.

Teach the footwork/foundation first and then do drills to reinforce. Just doing drills will not make you better defensively.
