Thanks so much everyone for sharing your stories - this is a huge help. I've been gathering thoughts from other students and parents here in my area as well. I'm going to try to advocate for some change - a policy or guideline towards a scheduling courtesy for student athletes. Right now, we do have to make a "huge stink" - as JAD put it - to get a schedule changed for athletics. I would love to see our area schools working together with their athletic departments to better the tradition of the student athlete.
Our district is currenlty working on new disciplinary policies to reduce missed class time. For example, the number of straight up suspensions given will be reduced in favor of more "in-school" type suspensions. I may be able to piggyback on this policy and argue that athletes shouldn't miss class, either.
Boy, I wish we had lights on all our fields. Something else to add to the list for when I win the lottery
