This is a scenario that was brought to my DD's attention twice this past week. Once was in a middle school game and this past wkend in a TB game. Here it is.
She is a catcher that normally sets up about 5 to 10 incessant behind the back of the batters box then adjusts to where the batters are standing in the box. Twice she was told that she was to far back because the umpires could not see the angle of the pitch across the plate and where it ended up in her glove. Last season she was called for catchers interference because she was told to move up. My question is, do most umpires want the catcher to set up close to the plate to help them see the angle of the ball. She has been catching for 2 full seasons and this was the first time she had been told this.
Thanks for any helpful input.

From a squat have her reach the glove up to the batters back elbow. If she can almost reach it she should be good to go. If there is a foot or so of distance she can probably move up. Being tucked up close is especially important with a good drop ball pitcher.

Glove almost being able to touch hitter's back knee is a more consistent reference point as the elbow position may vary significantly depending on style.

Which umpire has a better view of the strike zone, one who is 3-5' away from the plate or one the catcher has pushed back 10-12' from the plate?

What a silly question. If you have ever been to a game you would know it is the umpire seated in the stands 40 feet away behind a chain link backstop. :)

and to the side, everyone knows you can see both the inside and outside part of the plate best from the 3rd/1st base side
