No error on the SS. LF gets a talking too and the pitcher has to suck up the fact that she is charged with a hit. After all one day there will be a smash shot that the SS will steal a hit from a batter, or the LF will make a catch on a ball that should have been a double. As far as pitchers stats, there will be plenty of balls that could have been hits that aren't and flairs that should not be hits that are.

I don't know where this if it hits leather its an error comes from, obviously people aren't watching MLB or D1 college softball, it happens all the time that a player gets glove on a ball that is scored a hit.

In defense of the SS, she was running pretty fast and was stretching to get a glove on it. It was NOT a "can of corn" fly ball that she booted, which is why we got onto the LF for not calling her off and making the routine play!!! We teach our SS and 2B to go after short OF fly balls until they are called off.

From this description, why would it not be a hit? My first impression was she was back pedaling and the ball was just our of her reach.

Based on this info, it's a hit.

2) Error on the LF for not calling her off?

Mental mistakes like these are not 'scored' as errors.

3) Charge your pitcher with giving up a base hit?

The words you chose here might explain why this was a hard call for you to make. When you say 'charge your pitcher with giving up a base hit,' you highlight that the fact that the pitcher is being served an injustice. It's true, she is, but that's irrelevant to scoring because scoring isn't about justice. It's about applying definitions, in this case a hit and an error.

Definitely not an error on the leftfielder. Either a hit or an error on the shortstop but the way you describe it it's a hit.
