    3 Essential hitting drills for non-Rec 10U

I don't know about drills but when I occasionally work with a player that young I focus on grip, stance and posture. Typically I see kids with a bad grip due to someone telling them to get the back elbow up and weight stacked on the back foot because someone told them to get their weight back...

Are Midrange bats a thing for a HS player?

just keep on mind the fact that bat weights can be off by as much as 2 ounces, so a 32-22 by one manufacturer doesn't have to be the same as one by another manufacturer. There is a bat weight table that will you give a general idea of which bat makers are accurate and which are not.

    Only Two Pitchers

This is the most likely scenario, 4 innings at the most, but at this level that can still mean a lot of pitches. Typically it's back to back games then a one game break before the thrid game.

    Only Two Pitchers

I should have added that he was asking the question in terms of what would be easier on the pitchers physically, to pitch half of three games vs all of one then coming back for half of the third. He realizes that with the weaker pitcher going in all three games he could lose them all whereas he...

    Only Two Pitchers

I had a coach of a team with only two pitchers ask me if I thought it was better to split each pool play game or go with a full game each then split the third game. One of the pitchers is definitely stronger than the other,

Getting an off the plate/outside strike

What kind of spin does that pitch have? She could be 'losing' the ball between the index finger and the thumb, it kind of slips out, with bullet spin. If that's the case having her focus on throwing top spin could be a fix.

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

I just find it hard to get excited about a pitch where the average break by the pitchers at the most competitive programs in the country is LESS than 2 inches. Remember, 2 inches of break is in the elite category. From release to contact can you even see a 2 inch break. If you think that 2...

When is it time to give up?

Having an understanding of what you are doing wrong is a blessing and a curse. In her case the hip closes early and interferes with her arm action. If she's thinking about this while she's actually pitching to a hitter she's going to struggle. She should have one or more positive cues that she...

When is it time to give up?

If you've done all the traditional drills for accuracy before she gives it up I would go outside the box. I have some suggestions if you want to try something different.

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

The statistics are a little unsatisfying because they don't tell you how many, or what percentage of the pitchers at these programs have an 'elite' amount of break. And while the 4" number draws attention let's not overlook the fact that 2" of break is also considered 'elite' and the average...

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

Let's keep this in perspective, "Using Rapsodo data from 9 of the last 10 Women’s College World Series Champions and 19 of the top 25 programs in the U.S" So Rapsodo says of the above college programs: 2-4" is elite, the average is less than 2", about half the width of the ball, for the best...

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

Because the catcher sets the glove as a target but if the pitch doesn't go right at the glove the catcher has to move it to catch the ball. If the catcher sets the glove and the pitch is high the catcher is going to have move the glove up to catch the ball, does that mean it's a riseball? The...

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

It's just camera angle. If you look at any recruiting videos you can see the same effect. At the 25 second mark you get a view from behind the catcher and the ball path is dead straight. To accurately see if there's break you need to be more in line with the path of the ball, either behind the...

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

Studies have shown that when the brain overestimates the speed of the pitch (change up) the hitter will swing over the ball, so having a trajectory where the ball floats or stays up works against this. And vice versa when the brain underestimates the speed of the pitch the hitter will swing...

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

I slowed it down even more using the YouTube settings and that's not what I see, there is a slight up and towards the hitter tilt to the spin axis and I think that camouflages the fact that it's still mostly bullet spin.

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

I watched some video of a Va Tech vs Alabama game. Rochard's rise was about half back, half bullet which is enough to give it a good float. It was about 60 mph, her fastest pitch, a drop, was 63 at best. It also looked like she threw a pretty good palm up curve at about 60. Fouts however threw...

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

Madi Balk, a little bullet/curve spin along with back spin, but it floats. I wonder what kind of velocity it has.

    Welcome to Bulletspin Season!

As a general rule I think there is a trade off between back spin and velocity, the more of one the less of the other. Kelly B was a rarity. I'm not sure how effect a slow riseball would be at the higher levels.

Sorry ... the WORST game I have ever seen. EVER.

I have you beat by almost double digits, 42-41. At the end of 7 innings the other coach came over and said the score was tied 42 all, we said no you won 42-41. Our pitcher threw 209 pitches. It's hard to describe how bad some of the varsity teams are in this area, but when you have zero travel...
