Harassing pitcher

During the Seattle NCAA D-1 Regional games between Wa & Texas, member(s) of the Texas crowd repeatedly blew a whistle as Gabbie Plain (Washington pitcher) was releasing the ball. When this was shut down (violation of facility rules), members of the Texas bench began screeching loudly as the pitch was being delivered. They laughed uproariously & nobody said a word! It’s certainly an example of unsportsmanlike conduct but is it a rules violation? I’ve watched countless games & never seen such bad conduct by fans or teams (including a Texas fan ejection the previous day for a harassing profane remark screamed as a Husky batter prepared to bat). Teams can’t control fans but they clearly can & should reign in player conduct.

I would imagine that the folks in Fayetteville won't appreciate that sort of behavior.

I believe Mike White flipped the bird on being ejected from a game last week, so maybe the classy behavior starts at the top.

Mike White was at 3rd base coaching with this happening behind him…he never blinked an eye. The Husky Softball Park staff tried to keep things from escalating & had a Seattle PD officer stationed on the concourse above the Texas section on the second day. But the whole situation was crazy. Mike White heard & reacted to the incident that resulted in the fan expulsion on Saturday but he allowed his team to engage in conduct that was juvenile & grossly inappropriate. Earlier, his pitcher charged home plate to protest a call that a batter was hit. She could have been tossed…

We have a local HS team that has a group of obnoxious girls who scream at the pitcher when she goes into her windup. The last time we played them, they were banging on the dugout walls to make noise, and the umpire came over and out a stop to the banging. He said they could scream all they wanted, but they could not bang on the dugout. I told my daughter the easiest way to shut them up was to strike them out, which she did.

As for fans, that's out of the coach's control. If NBA players can shoot free throws with all the attempts at distraction going on, then pitchers should be able to do so, too. It's not as if they're a bunch of primadonnas, like a certain former great golfer who dropped out of the PGA Championship this weekend...

Our girls (MS) have done the timed screaming to mess with the pitcher a few times. We have one travel player and she's always got some new dugout nonsense to share. I always put a stop to the timed screaming because they don't realize they're distracting their teammate at the plate.

The taunting chants got to my daughter a couple weeks ago. She couldn't throw a freakin strike. It was the most annoying bunch she'd ever pitched against.

They did their job very effectively.

As my college coach used to say...there are two types of class, first and none.

Behavior like this by players is usually easily traced back to the parents, but sometimes the coach. The fact that fans/parents acted this way is not a shock.

There is a local HS team that is, for lack of a better word, simply obnoxious in the dugout. One doesn't have to look much past the coach to see the parents that also influence their actions. Funny that they get real quiet when things are not going their way in a game.

Judgemental? Yes. Accurate? Also, yes.

Blaming the umpire for determining/influencing the outcome of the game? No, but some will say yes. :ROFLMAO:

I’ve told this story before. My dd was 12 (lefty pitcher) and we were playing in a mid week league of travel teams. End of season and we were eliminated in the playoffs. Coach from another team approaches and asks if she would like to guest play with them for a couple of tourneys. She is standing right there so I ask her what she thinks and she says “isn’t this the team that screams everytime the pitcher pitches” yes I think this is them she looks at him and says “no thanks I wouldn’t want to play on a team that does that” the look on his face was priceless.

We played a team a couple of weeks ago where they had this one girl who was just screaming in the dugout. It was the most annoying thing I'd ever heard. We actually sat and watched the team in the game before us since we'd play the winner and I was just hoping we wouldn't be playing them. It obviously didn't affect our pitcher since the game actually was really well pitched on both sides. We ended up winning 2-1 after having to play a ITB inning. I have gone back to watch our video of the game and it's super obnoxious listening to it. As a parent of them, I'd be embarrassed. I really thought that level of screaming went away by 16U. Can't imagine that it's still happening college level!

As an official, I know the rules and what teams can do/can't do. I will generally observe when I see/hear this behavior occur and let it go once, twice perhaps (to see if it's an individual circumstance or part of something more coordinated). If need be, I'll call a pitch/play, then I will go straight to the offending dugout and warn the entire team/bench for unsportsmanlike conduct (especially if I can tell it's blatant - they can cheer/yell all they want, but it needs to start before the pitcher is into her motion AND the volume level must remain flat through). When a coach tries to argue the matter, I'll end the conversation by saying to the coach, loud enough for the team to hear, "The next offender is getting ejected, and it'll be my best call who it is, so if you don't want to lose someone that will matter, get your mouths under control." I've had a couple of coaches get snooty about it, but usually, the threat of ejection shuts most of them up pretty quickly.
