On the field next to us, playing 18A, a pitcher was struck by a hard hit line drive.

The question is: to mask or not to mask?
I'm betting that if she were wearing a rip it mask, she may only have a bruise where the mask sits on her forehead right now.
Hope she's OK.

Not here.
DD is 15 now and has been wearing a mask since age 11. Has been hit in the mask at least 3 times in the circle. I said ''hit in the mask'' not her face. Thankfully DD doesn't know how the poor girl above feels.

I have to wonder how many pitchers would start wearing masks if the pitching distance was returned to 40 feet. Even though the reduction in distance would only provide a negligible increase in risk I would expect that Rip-It would have a banner year.

Thank you for posting this. We have four pitchers on our team. Three wear rip-its, the other doesn't. Our team encourages the use of masks for pitchers and corner infielders but we don't make it mandatory. I plan to show this picture to all the parents on our team. More importantly, I hope this young lady is ok. Situations like this change my focus from that of a coach to that of a dad. And yes, I think they should be used in boys leagues as well.
