Doesn't really matter unless they also instituted a way to qualify as gold. Teams can call themselves whatever they want to these days.

The only requirements are 1) come close to spelling the word gold so at least people can recognize it even if misspelled. and 2) be able to afford to have someone print it on their shirt.

I'm surprised they made it effective for 2014 at this late date. Are they going to piggy back on existing 16A Nats with a separate bracket for 16G or will they award 16G to different organizers?

16GOLD will be held in conjunction with 18GOLD.

The rationale is that college coaches are looking primarily at 16u recruting wise. It is thought that by bringing the best players in both 16 and 18u together at the same site, it will draw the coaches which will draw the players.

They should just consolidate it into a "HS aged kid GOLD". That's what 18 gold used to be anyway, they tournament directors found out they could make more money by having 16u showcases and it diluted the talent pool.

that would make sense, but it is not what ASA posted on their FB page. They posted: "2014 18 GOLD will be in OKC. !6 GOLD date and location still TBD."

PGF has made tremendous inroads at the very highest level of club softball to where they are now the premier circuit for the high end D1 player.

ASA is still the circuit of choice for the majority of scholarship players. The battle extends to other circuits also NSA, ISA, USSAA, WFC.

This is an attempt by the ASA to gain back what they have lost recently to the PGF.
