We also don't know for sure that it is in fact a tag play and not a force out where the fielder is also attempting to make a tag. I had that situation in a HS game where my F5 fielder attempted a tag on a force play and was late with the tag but accidentally stepped on 3rd while trying to make it ... Umps original call was safe, I argued and won.
