Our town’s spring rec is combined grades 5&6, and 12u rules, but our town’s travel next summer will still be 10u for players with 2012 and younger birthdates (most of our 5th graders.) We do not have an 11u program. For fall ball, our 5th graders have been playing 12u rules, and our 5th grade pitchers started taking lessons with the 12” ball. What development problems should I look for when coaching rec and travel when pitchers must switch back and forth between the 11” and 12” ball and 36’ versus 40’ pitching distances? Maybe they should have stayed with the 11” ball for pitching lessons since travel is a priority over rec and/or tough to switch between? Pitchers are in various stages of development with the 12” ball and 40’ distance - the strongest pitcher has a consistent fastball and good location, and is working on a change up. Others were still working on fundamentals/consistency with the 11” ball, and only started with the 12” ball last week. I welcome any feedback. Thank you.
