And to the above regarding a separate thread......this might be worth a discussion.....except in different thread not to derail this one.....and I will say she is one of my favorites but didn't gain attention to her own thread for some reason....not knocking the OP.... just the opposite. Brings a great point and so many others do "various" things....

Montana Fouts doesn't have her own thread because she pitches legally, or pretty much legally. So nothing to remark upon. She's doing a great job.

Illegal pitching is endemic because the rule isn't where it should be: leaping or hopping or even replanting could be allowed. Step one foot on the rubber, take the signal, present, and go. Make sure you stay in the lane.

But...the rules are the rules. And where we are right now, JB is pitching very illegally, very frequently; nearly every pitch.

"Pretty much legally"???? What does that mean. Just let it go and enjoy the competition. JB is not obviously illegal in real time most of the time.

Dang....I was giving you some cred until you posted this. Not sure how you cannot see this at this view (side view) but this was part of a point that I want to point out and was saving for the idea of another thread on "illegal pitching". Most of us only see what is on TV and most of those games are behind the pitcher. You have to look extremely hard to see the TV's point of view from behind to see anything other than normal and legal pitching. However, attend a game and watch from the side and you will see much more than you will ever see on TV.

I AGAIN will say I don't want to get off topic with this thread and happy to start another one as I think it may be helpful and open the eyes to many...........

But back to the point of Montana pitching legally....or pretty much legally.....???? Not sure what that means. Maybe sometimes, maybe not others?? Really???? Ok..........???

Can anyone here please tell me what is wrong or possibly illegal with this video above of Fouts? @Shiloh, you can answer too although kinda already did......

Hint.... you can't move the pitching rubber a foot or so (another hint: gym step) and use it to take off. Okay.....another helpful hint.......look very very closely on where the rubber is and where her foot is......Last hint......it is well in front of the rubber.......

Am I trying to call her out? NO. As stated she is one of my favorites but I can call out many of my favorites on "illegal" pitching...... Finch, Abbott, Ueno, Traina, Cat, and the list goes on and on and on...........

Saw a South Carolina pitcher landing outside the pitching lane earlier today. Not called and have seen it many times before by others....

If "illegal" pitching was called on every pitch the games on a weekend would likely last until Wednesday of the following week because there would be more stopping the game than actually playing it. Just my humble opinion.

I don't know how many college games the members here attend on a regular basis. I have averaged 15-20 a year for at least the last 10 years, in all three divisions. I have a very good hi-def camera and use the highest shutter speed. I always take lots of video, being an instructor I am always interested in the individual methods that pitchers have developed to get the job done. When you look closely at video you see that a lot of pitchers lose contact with the ground at some point. Most of the time it's so quick that it goes unnoticed. I don't see it as a big advantage. Replanting is another story and is something that should be regulated. And as long as we're talking about illegal how about this pitcher's footwork? Take a good luck at her pushoff foot.

I have as well @ArmWhip. For years now and while I focus on as many aspects of the game but I am laser focused on pitching. To your point.......I have seen what looks like a "legal" pitcher to the eye to only become an "illegal" pitcher on video. We can all play Monday morning quarterback and look at video that proves otherwise which I did above. There is a "illegal" pitching youtube out there and will try to dig it up. Some are obvious but some look just fine until you slow it down on video and then you see it.

Ueno is one of them and another good part of your post. She is on the highlight reel for an illegal pitching thread yet hasn't been a big topic of DFP like some others.....

Good post @ArmWhip!!

Good read and observations!

It has been an interesting thread to read with different good observations added.

1. There is the aspect of whether or not umpires are calling it. Simply adds to the inconsistencies that comes with umpiring in general.
Doesn't make it right but it's inconsistent like balls and strikes anyway game to game.

2. The question of whether or not it actually helps pitchers. Does it matter or not to be a rule?

3. The focus on these top Elite pitchers doing it. While even though there are other pitchers that do it that get no attention about it at all.

4. In my opinion #3 exposes that perhaps it may not matter if pitchers are leaping if the hitters are hitting. which I have brought that up before. if you're hitters are hitting do you really care what the pitcher is doing?

5. If we stay focused on playing the game the sport itself and stop focusing on what the official may or may not do then we can just focus to counter whatever the pitcher is doing by being better hitters. Which really the goal is the pitcher to defeat the batter. if the batter is not being defeated it doesn't matter what the pitcher is doing.

Will definitely say it's amazing that this conversation is still being had about pitching mechanics. 40 years of hearing people discuss this kind of topic.
In my opinion the worst thing that can come of this is if it gets in your head on the field.
@RADcatcher displays the mental fortitude of being a competitor on the field. I recognize it because it mirrors my daughters drive when she pitches. On the field she is not thinking about the umpire, she is thinking about the next pitch she has to throw and has worked on throwing thousands of times. The umpire is not going to change her focus.

For those that consider it cheating it can identify as offensive. Therefore there is someone to blame for it.

TN swung the bats fairly well against her yesterday (despite the 14 K’s). That was a good game.

16 according to the box score. JB did get touched up a bit before getting pulled, but looked stronger when she came back in. Gasso must have huge confidence in her to put a freshman back in that game. JB quickly recovered after some mistakes, and didn't let down when the offense blew golden opportunities in the 8th and 9th innings. An impressive performance.
