6 inning game, team is home.

Starting pitcher pitches first 2, gives up one run to the visiting team. Home team scores 5 in the first. ( none in 2nd)

Because of a possible long day, the starting pitcher is pulled to begin the 3rd. Relief pitcher goes the last four giving up 3 runs to the opposing team. In the final four, the home team scores 3. The final score is 8-4 win for the home team.

Which pitcher is credited with the win?

So Cal
Starting pitcher gets the W. Visiting team never got past the lead that the home team had while the starting pitcher was still in the game.

Some organizations, including the NCAA and the national HS federation, require that the starting pitcher go more than 2 innings to get the win. If it were an NCAA game, the reliever would get the win.

I didn't know that about the NFHS rule. Thanks.

NFHS

a. The starting pitcher is credited with a win in the following circumstances:
1. When she pitches at least half of the innings in the game and her team stays ahead for the remainder of the game.

Interesting topic that has come up quite a bit lately.

What if the starting pitcher is having a bad day and gives up a lot of runs and then is pulled in the 1st inning and the run defecit is never overcome resulting in a loss.

Had this happen Sunday. Starting pitcher came in and gave up 6 runs in the first inning with only 1 out recorded. Reliever came in and did o.k., but we lost 7-2.

If a pitcher starts, throws one pitch, it's a homerun, is pulled and a relief enters, lose 1-0, starter for the one run/pitch gets the loss.

d. A pitcher shall be charged with the loss when the team is behind or falls behind because of runs assessed to that pitcher and the team does not subsequently tie the score nor take the lead.
