Noticed looking through several D1 College rosters that literally 50% of their recruitment for 2023 came from the transfer portal.

Thats some heavy competition for graduating high school seniors!

🤷‍♀️ not certain I like the always open door policy of wanting to transfer without sitting out a year.
So much fluctuation not enough dedication.

What say DFP
How much recruitment from transfer portal are you seeing?

Every kid that transfers opens up another roster spot at that school, so while it is not totally a zero sum game, it isn't the big deal people are making. It is more the extra years players have got via COVID that has restricted spots and only at certain schools. Not every school has the ability to take the talented player...

And frankly why should movement be restricted. Not restricted if they wanted to study at a different school, or if a coach wants to move or whatever. Why should the school have any call over who and where.

The whole system is stupid. Having elite sports and college together makes zero sense. It makes zero sense your playing career is over at 22-23 yrs of age. Current scholarship rules and limits make zero sense. It is all dumb.

No one else does it this was except in the USA.

Even if we are going to continue down this path - which apparently shows no signs of changing - the NCAA missed a huge opportunity with coming out of COVID. They could have just moved up to 20 scholarships and 6 years of eligibility or any range of other ideas (why not - the limits today are arbitrary) - but instead they just did nothing intelligent like normal.

Yes! Seeing that also.
Playing time and/or $$$$$

Yes! The money part! My ds who just committed D3 for baseball will be getting an extremely nice scholarship over four years at a D3 for his academics - much more than he would have received in the form of an athletic scholarship at a D1 school (main position is OF).

True it opens a spot, but the spot is held by the player until the player decides whether or not they're going to stay. Then those spots are opening up much much later in time frame for recruitment... aka the end of the players season right befor the short summer of recruitment. Basically the coach doesn't know they have a spot they need to fill until very late. Possibly making taking recruits from the transfer portal simply the easier route. 🤷‍♀️

That and it's pretty weird to hear college coaches saying I don't know if I have a spot yet until our senior decides if she wants to take her super senior year.

The whole situation is a cluster of stupidity. Should have never have added a covid year. If they just had a little foresight they would have seen this mess coming. The portal was a great idea on paper but should have had some rules. Like a player can only enter the portal once? Or can only enter the portal after freshman and sophomore season? Something to stop the musical chairs game we have now. Again the lack of foresight is disgracefully. NCAA, be better.

Three thoughts...

1. The rich will get richer, but for every player who leaves a team, that's an opportunity that just opened up for someone else.

2. If you're wanting to play at OU or for any other top team, you should think twice if you're only barely good enough to be there. I've seen several transfer out of top programs when it apparently became clear to them that their future lay elsewhere. It's fun to tell everyone at your HS that you're going to a top college program, but then reality hits when you find yourself surrounded by better players. However, it's also clear that if you're really THAT good, you can start as a freshman at those schools.

3. If you're a veteran player on that Power 5 or even mid-major and think that you can't be replaced no matter what BS you pull, you're mistaken. There are transfers and freshman lining up to take your spot and money.

It may not be a zero sum gain. 12 full scholarships divided by 20-25 players? Assuming you would not transfer for less money. Many transfers maybe going from 1/4 to a 3/4 would take a 1/2 scholarship.
Second coaches maybe upping scholarships to prevent transferring.

The 5th year should be a non issue for the 2023 class as the 2017 class has lost eligibility and assuming the same% stop after 4 years it will be a full class that needs replaced.

I think it is the portal and not the Covid year

Does anybody know how many player enter the portal and never come out. Recently heard a D-1 college coach say 30%. Maybe he was just trying to keep his players. LOL. He also said that when they recruit they take notice of how many TB teams/orgs. players have been on. Looking for some loyalty when recruiting.

Love these coaches. They always want loyalty to 'the program' or 'the team' but it is always one way loyalty - they are the first to take the next opportunity or cut a player they think they can replace..

100%, this just gives the players the same options the coaches have. The coaches will replace the players if they aren’t happy with them. Now the players can replace them as well.

Is the 5th year eligibility available for more than one class? What grad years are allowed this?
