DD plays 16U. We are playing in an 18U showcase this weekend though and have played and won another 18U toury already this year. Generally we compete in the 16U divisions but good to move up and play against stronger players sometimes. In the NE as well. All the girls on the team though are 15 or 16.

Our team is 16U but has played only 18U up to this point this season. This coming weekend we’ll be playing a 16U USSSA tournament after playing in 18U showcases the last two weeks.

Why? Because the tournament we originally scheduled got canceled and we had to scramble to get some games in. Being officially 16U gives you a lot of flexibility if you’re willing to play either 16s or 18s.

I think most will "register" as 16u just to keep their options open. As said before, the teams that can will often play up and enter 18u tournaments, buy they still have the option of playing in tournaments with strong 16u divisions. I do understand what you are saying though, there is definitely a mindset here in the NE that once they get to high school you should just play 18u, since you are already playing 18u as a varsity player.

Depends on the org here. DD2s org had 3 18u and 4 or 5 16u teams last year. This year? 5 18u teams and ZERO 16u. 😮 3 teams at 14u and nothing below.

DD1s org has 20 teams from 10-18u. There are 3 18u teams with the highest level kids on the National team and somewhat even distribution between the other 2. Most everyone is committed on the 18u National team, including DD1. Each year that team has 1 or 2 freshman and maybe another 3 or 4 that could still play 16u. DD is among those that could still be in 16u. Mostly the thinking for us to go up was to get DD two full years of seeing high level 18u pitching before heading off to college.

That said, our 16u National team is loaded so they dont need the 2024s to have stayed down. They get LOTS of college attention and they are mostly 2026. The #2 team still gets plenty of recruiting attention as well. That team is mostly 2nd-year 16s. There are several other 16u teams not at the same level.

The 14s are set up similarly. Top kids on the National team with various other teams of different talent levels.
