My DD's last travel team had a player guest play twice in the summer after the player had finished her freshman season. She didn't play much as a freshman and was looking for reps, so her former club team was helping her out.

Also, surprised a tournament would say no college players. What's the logic there?

After a full college season, most girls want/need a break. I truly believe players need a break to improve and for college softball players, summer is the best time for that break.

I figured that too. She does weights all year. I could see her either taking off or maybe picking up. She was just wondering how the girls stayed softball sharp between seasons.

I see it happen often. Just needs to be on the right team that doesn't view her to be taking time from their players who are still being recruited.

That’s why she was thinking maybe 23u. I think they carry big rosters because the girls just make what games they want, and can take a break if they want. At least that’s what it seems.

Triple Crown does not and I believe USA PREPS and PGF don't because the "focus" is on girls not in college yet and recruitment.

We just played our USA State tournament. Our team is 18U but mostly 16U eligible. We played another 18U team that was players who had just completed their Freshman year of college but still 18U eligible. They didn't get a HS season and summer season last year and/or little time as a freshman were looking to play.

They handled us easily. They were good and you could tell the difference of a 19YO (18u eligible) college woman and 16YO HS Sophomores and Juniors.

My DD welcomed the challenge. Some of the girls had individual success against this team. My DD welcomed the challenge and said it's not everyday I play against a college freshman team. She said it only helps her get better.

From what I have read, one of the reasons the PGF national tournament was started was that the ASA nationals were allowing college freshman to participate and some orgs did not agree with that philosophy.

We are in the same situation. Our current team is not allowing their college players back for next year. We actually have a 'tryout' tonight for another team that may allow us to play with them in the summer. Its awkward. SHe will be the best player on the team by far, but because she's coming back from college, it's like she has major cooties.

We will see how it goes. She wants to play. What difference does college make? The kids we play against are just as good or better than my college-bound DD.

For some college freshman, it might be the most playing time they get all year.
Yep. I know a bunch of college freshmen that pretty much didn’t play an inning. From P5 to small D3’s. In fact, most off the 2020’s I know didn’t play.

Some guy was huffing and puffing in another thread about how unfair life was for his 2022…. I thought “you just wait, buddy.”
