I agree with MTS that the first thing you need to fix is the bat dropping flat before she swings. I think many kids go through this. I like the rope idea behind her. Another thought is stand behind her and hold her bat at the correct angle and don't let her drop it. Have her sing into a tee but put a heavy bag in front of it (so she can't follow through and hit you on the follow through). I would do this over and over until she is swinging without dropping the bat head. I wouldn't soft toss until you feel improvement. You will feel it becuase you will be holding the bat head when she starts her swing. If she wants to drop it, you'll push it back up. I also wonder if you give her instant video feedback when you work with her. I would make sure she sees as soon as possible what she's doing and as you work and see improvement (or not) show her.

I can't believe individuals want to teach tilt. The video that is being used is of a chest high pitch. What do you guys think a hitter gains by tilt?

So explain to me your reason for not getting a hitter in an athletic position when they hit. IE: Tilting. While you wouldnt want to do that on a chest high pitch, how many chest high pitches are you going to chase so you can pop them up? That is the reason we teach pitchers to throw rise balls in bunt situations and tight spots. Get me a pop out.

If your behind in the count and have 2 strikes then you can just foul it off and get the next best pitch offered. A coach I once knew had a great saying that while he used it way too much when he was in the coaches box down on 3rd but still applies today when protecting the plate.

Foul off the ones you dont like.

Tilting helps load the muscles of the body. Loading the muscles of the body stores energy in them. Energy that is unloaded on the ball during the swing. Tilting sets the swing plane on a slightly upward path to the ball, and it allows the hitter to adjust to the outside pitch while staying connected with their swing. If taught properly.

That is why you teach a hitter to tilt. If you dont then they will never handle an outside pitch. What is the #1 pitch you see in the amateur level softball today? The outside pitch. Curve, Drop curve, Drop, Rise, Fastball, Change up, All on the outside corner.

She knows she has to get the bat down to where the ball is. Many kids solve the problem with their arms. The elite solve it like clips one through eight in the above link.

Bustos even on a chest high pitch is still tilted over the plate (ever so slightly but still tilted). I am not really a fan of side toss. Maybe it is just my kids but I have noticed kids seem to really reach for the ball. I like front toss alot better. Alot of do dis and do dats floating around, most of them have some merit if done properly. I would suggest dry swings and tees only until you see consistant swings that you both like. A moving ball can quickly bring out bad habits.

I am saying teaching tilt is the wrong way to go about it. You have to hit the best pitchers where ever they allow you to hit it at. teaching tilt is counterproductive to a high average with power swing. Tilt is more of a result of ground forces being applied during the swing by the elite athlete not something they are trying to do. simply an action of force.
