Who should get the ball?

Only the ump from the NL Wild Card game would have called this an infield fly. Mix of old and new players on the team, trying kids in various positions, so no one would have the ability to call off all other players. No other fielders calling either kid's name.

Concerned because outfielder is one of the weaker players and not confident.

This doesn't matter. She should still have priority over any infielder.

Smddad, I agree that it does not matter. I'm just concerned that the outfielder will be hesitant to go for the ball the next time. Also concerned that it reinforces in her mind and in others' minds that she made the wrong decision.

We practice this play quite often. What we do is have the middle infield run back hard for the ball. It's theirs until/unless they are called off by the outfield.

We teach our infielders to go after shallow fly balls until the outfielder calls them off. The infielder does not call the ball and the outfielder has priority.
