Outfielders when do you take a drop step? Do you do it on every ball, or do you read the ball for a moment first?

Outfielders when do you take a drop step? Do you do it on every ball, or do you read the ball for a moment first?

I teach mine to take a drop step to the ball side as soon as they can tell where it's coming. No matter if they have to run up or back. If the think it is right at them, they drop step to thier glove side.
