Hello all, i was just wanting to get some clarity on a play that happened in a game
runner on 3rd base, batter stays in the box when runner is coming from 3rd on a passed ball, what is the call?
is it if less then 2 outs then the runner is called out and if 2 outs the batter is called out? also what happens if its a called 3rd strike but the catcher misses ball and runner is coming but the batter doesn't get out of the box in time, are they both out at that point?

If the batter, regardless of her position in or out of the batters box, hinders the defense from making a play, then the ball is dead, and she (the batter) is out. The runner must return to 3rd.

On an uncaught 3rd strike, she becomes a batter-runner. A batter-runner who interferes with a play at home plate in an attempt to prevent an out at home plate, she is out and the runner is also out.

If the batter runner interferes with the uncaught 3rd strike (ie kicks it), in an attempt to prevent a double play, she is out and the runner closest to home is out.

There weren't enough details in your post to really make a call though...was there a play at the plate? Did the batter hinder the defense? Or did she just stand there while the catcher scrambled for the ball and the runner crossed the plate?

sorry, ya the batter is young and didnt really understand and realize they called a strike but then it passed by the catcher so she kinda just stood there in confusion as the 3rd base runner was coming home, then once she realized the runner was coming she tried to scramble out of the way towards first (hot mess) and created confusion of the play at the plate and didnt get completely out of the way of the pitcher coming in to receive the ball from catcher to make the tag

I would call this interference. if this is younger ages, hopefully either blue or coach turns it into a teaching moment. need to explain to the entire team what suzy shoudl have done, not calling suzy out, but expliaining that it could happen to any of them, so they all need to know how to react. PB I always taught to back pedal a bit, find ball, if you can see it, keep backpedaling to fence, if not, ball is likely behind you, just stop and be still.

ya it was def a teaching moment, so as far as interference then the batter is out and the runner returns to 3rd regardless if the pitcher tagged the runner sliding home

problem was, everyone yelling to get out of the box and the rest of them yelling run to first because of the dropped 3rd strike

" problem was, everyone yelling to get out of the box and the rest of them yelling run to first because of the dropped 3rd strike "

the two instructions are not mutually exclusive

If the defense was able to retire the runner coming from third, then there was no interference. After all, what did the batter do to hinder play?

Now, if she did hinder play, that’s an immediate dead ball and the batter is out. What happens after that doesn’t matter because the ball was dead. It’s possible that the batter hinders the play, but the defense recovers and can still record the out. But we don’t allow for the out to prevail because it happened after play was ruled dead.
