My DD got diagnosed with a sprain \ strain of either her UCL or the group of muscles that help you grip the ball. (forgot the technical term). It happened at the end of a brutal 2 day tournament. I believe the injury occurred from being exhausted and overworked. Lesson learned. But I wanted to put of video of her up throwing to see if any of you see any mechanical issues just to be sure.

Thanks,

James

1. Looking smooth to the untrained eye. (y)
2. Does she fee l pain at a particular point in the delivery? 😬
3. Hard to figure out if the camera is her friend. ;)

She looks pretty solid. Is she by chance a Tincher student?

I don't see anything that would cause undue stress anywhere on her arm, so it was/is probably an overuse injury, unless she alters her mechanics in a game.

The only real mechanical issues I see are more or less nitpicks. She has a small leap and she kind of blows through her release, missing out on some angular acceleration that would result from a more firmly stabilized upper arm.

But, in my opinion, she's pretty solid.

She felt pain when her arm extended after release. She has a natural hyperextension of the elbow. She said it felt like something was pulling. We went to an elbow specialist, and he said it is impossible to know exactly without an MRI. Since she is 14YO in 8th grade he didn't think an MRI was necessary and take 6 weeks off. We are halfway through.

No tincher student. I taught her, with the help of java and Fastpitch power, and hill house videos, and several others. Hours and hours of videos. Some of the best instructors in the world have amazing content out there. If you are good at taking those videos and applying it, it is amazing what you can learn.

Her fastest is around 54 maybe 55 but rarely does she throw that in a game. Normally between 51 - 53. She has great movement and command. We do want to increase her velocity of course when she gets healthy. So I am trying to understand what you are saying about the blow through. Her upper arm needs to brush more solidly, giving her forearm more time to extend, is that right? And how would you address that?

Thanks

Overhand throw may be the culprit. My DD is prone to tennis elbow and it gets aggravated when there is a lot of overhand throwing, rarely/never from pitching.

Hard to tell from video but does she bang her ulnar against the thigh bs roll around it. She comes in pretty straight without a ton of bend. She may be contacting too hard and that would jar the ulnar and possibly cause issue with the ligament.
Just a thought.

This. I'm having a hard time understanding how you get UCL injury from softball pitching, since the the arm is basically straight.

This is how you hurt the UCL in baseball pitching. You could do the same thing in regular throwing in softball.

Agree...I would look into her over hand mechanics as this is much more likely to be the problem

The deceleration phase of a throw is a common cause of injury. Maybe look at a lot of pitchers to see how they do it?

Here is a Yukiko Ueno video.
