Every ball hit reduces the life span of any bat. I would restrict use of a purple Stealth or a quad-walled Phenix to game situations only. From a practical standpoint, I would always have a same make/model replacement ready to go for the time when the gamer meets its ultimate fate. Theoretically, you could get away with just 2 bats, but that means that there's unused space going to waste in DD's bat bag (my bat bag, the trunk, the garage, the office etc)!

IMO if you are not wearing out a bat once a year you are not hitting enough. In a perfect world you would be working on breaking in a new bat just as soon as your primary gets hot.
