In addition to tossing the ball high enough and far enough away from you - you’ll be able to control it easier if the contact point is around chest or shoulder height. To oversimplify it - you’re keeping your eye on the ball AND the bat at the same time.

They work - but wasn’t easy for me to use. Our HC was slightly more successful - it’s just not as easy as simply swinging a tennis racket. I found it easier just to use a bat, but for someone trying to learn to fungo, it may work for you.

The rackets are very hard to use, and they're only practical for infield work.

Pitching machines work, but they don't normally use real softballs.

I've seen variations of this item used before. My daughter had an assistant coach who had a similar one to this one, but it looked like a portable weight bench. He was very good at launching balls to the outfield with it.

If your program has the money, invest in one of these -

Our outfielders can get three times the number of reps in, plus its much easier to place those "tweeners" between the IF and OF and get everyone communicating on fly balls.

That initial investment is a lot, though ($2500).

oh geez...why does that have to be so expensive? It looks great...

If you have access to a (less-expensive)single wheel jugs machine, those can also be adjusted to shoot out fly balls. It just wouldn’t be possible to quickly alternate LF-RF like the Atec can do.
