Composite bats definitely bend. DD had a Bustos that would bend over my knee quite a bit. You can tell if abat is shaved when it breaks because there is a altering bat warning on the inside of the barrel that will be noticeably marked or gone.
I would start by watching a few of his games and practices. You can see how he conducts himself and organizes his games/practices to know if it would be a good fit or something you would even be interested.

I see the same thing happen with my daughter. She loves to swing a huge bat but her little body can not manage it. With her the trailing elbow gets ahead of the top hand and the barrel drops. Doesnt happen with a properly sized bat.
