If you are currently on a team, and looking to maybe go to a better team or organization. Never go to an open practice, always request a private tryout. If you are offered a spot, and except do not tell anyone until the season is over.

What does it mean when a team only posts “private tryouts?”
It prob means that they are looking for 1-2 girls and don't want to wait until a general tryout later in the Summer. It's a not so subtle way to get an early jump on tryouts and keep it quiet enough for the right subset of girls.

DD's former TB coach would always ask DD to catch prospective pitchers. He would always do the "tryout" at his warehouse. I liked to tag along to see who could possibly come on the team. One time a D1 coach came to a tryout for a pitcher. Because of her age the coach couldn't talk directly to the player. If there was a question it was relayed between the coaches, dad and player. I'm sure that helped seal the deal for the family as it showed the coach had deep relationships with college coaches.
