In the past I have said that, in a country with changing demographics, the future of the game of softball depends on the game reaching girls from more varied demographic groups, esp. girls who are non-white and/or poor. (And yes, white girls from intact middle-class families have been some of the sweetest softball teammates you could possibly imagine).
Here is a coach who is coaching girls from one of the poorest and least white parts of the country. Just as a note, a long time ago I taught at a community college about a mile away from that school -- Eugenio Maria Hostos Community College in the South Bronx, and I could see the old Yankee Stadium from the windows of some labs I taught.
